The ShippingX Vision·Borderless fundraising for regulated maritime capital

I.

The Objectives

What we set out to build

Designing for
regulated maritime
capital.

ShippingX set out to do something maritime finance had never seen: open up commercial vessel ownership to fractional, retail-adjacent investors — while staying fully compliant with European securities regulation. Our brief was to build the full surface of that platform end-to-end.

That meant designing not just an investor dashboard, but a complete Web3 ecosystem: a web platform for capital flows, an investor portal with full audit trails, a ship owner portal for fundraisers, an admin console for the operator, and the smart contracts underneath it all — all tied to a BaFin-supervised compliance backbone.

Our approach emphasized simplicity, security, and compliance to streamline complex Web3 investment workflows — so users never feel the weight of the regulatory machinery running underneath.

Production hardening, smart contract audit, BaFin filing.

II.

The Problems

Five barriers we had to dismantle

Why maritime
capital stayed closed.

Before tokenization, maritime financing was a private placement game — institutional only, opaque, slow to settle, and almost impossible to exit without restructuring the deal.

Five specific frictions were keeping it that way. Each one had to be solved technically and legally for the platform to exist.

Problem
01

Complex compliance.

Securities issuance, custody, and trading across European jurisdictions require continuous regulatory adherence — and most Web3 platforms treat compliance as an afterthought.

Problem
02

Limited asset access.

Investing in commercial vessels has historically been restricted to institutions with multi-million-euro tickets. Retail and mid-market investors were locked out.

Problem
03

Transaction risk.

Peer-to-peer crypto-to-asset swaps carry significant counterparty risk. There was no trustless settlement layer for tokenized maritime securities.

Problem
04

Low liquidity.

Maritime financing instruments are inherently illiquid — investors get locked in for years with no resale market and no built-in exit path.

Problem
05

Lack of transparency.

Without on-chain records, investors can't verify dividend distribution, governance votes, or ownership stakes without trusting the issuer's word.

III.

The Solution

Five pillars, one platform

A regulated& secure
ecosystem.

Five architectural commitments — each backed by a specific protocol decision — let us solve every problem simultaneously without breaking compliance.

The result: full operational autonomy, a built-in exit path, and European-wide investor reach from the day the platform went live.

Tokenization

ERC-1400 security tokens represent fractional vessel ownership.

P2P Trading

Permissioned secondary market with whitelist enforcement.

Secure Escrow

Atomic swap escrow eliminates counterparty risk in trades.

KYC Whitelisting

On-chain KYC/KYB controls who can hold and trade tokens.

On-Chain Governance

Token holders vote directly on key decisions, fully on record.

Typography & Brand

The visual system

Built for data-heavy
calm.

The challenge: designing for complex financial data, regulatory constraints, and multi-layered Web3 interactions — without overwhelming the investor.

The solution: clear, high-legibility typography with structured hierarchy and balanced spacing to ensure readability across dashboards, transactions, and analytical views — across every screen.

A quiet palette for serious money.

Deep navy as the institutional anchor. A medium blue accent that reads as digital, not corporate. Stark black and white for data clarity. No bright accents that fight the numbers — the palette stays out of the way of the work.

Solving UX

Reducing the cognitive load

Where the complexity
lived.

The interface had to make tokenized investing feel as natural as online banking — even though, underneath, every action involves smart contracts, multi-signature flows, compliance checks, and on-chain settlement.

This is where most Web3 products fail. The fix wasn't to hide complexity — it was to sequence it.

The Challenge

High cognitive load in tokenized workflows.

Navigating tokenized investments, compliance processes, and trading systems can overwhelm even experienced investors — Web3-native or otherwise. Every step risks dropoff.

The Solution

Intuitive flows with real-time feedback.

Simplified flows, a clear hierarchy, and real-time feedback at every step — enabling seamless investing, trading, and portfolio management without losing rigor or visibility into the underlying mechanics.

VI.

Key Features

What we shipped

Six features that
define the platform.

We designed core features to simplify complex financial workflows, ensure compliance, and enable seamless, real-time Web3 investment experiences — without ever shipping a flow that breaks the regulatory frame.

ShippingX cap table — ERC-1400 token holders and ownership split for Ocean Voyager

Feature 01 · Fractional Ownership

Tokenized asset access.

Investing in maritime assets shouldn't be limited to institutions. ERC-1400 tokenization enables fractional ownership of commercial vessels — making high-value investments accessible, transparent, and secure for a much wider investor base.

ShippingX transactions screen — incoming and outgoing funds with escrow status

Feature 02 · Atomic Swap Escrow

Secure transactions.

Trust in transactions is essential. Atomic swap escrow enables secure, instant exchange between stablecoins and tokens — eliminating counterparty risk on every trade.

ShippingX revenue distributions screen — selecting a distribution period

Feature 03 · Smart Dividend System

Automated revenue distribution.

Managing returns shouldn't be manual. Automated dividend distribution ensures investors receive earnings transparently and efficiently, based on their holdings.

ShippingX bulletin board — peer-to-peer market overview and available listings

Feature 04 · Smart Insights

Real-time data & updates.

Staying updated is crucial. Live shipping news feeds and real-time platform updates ensure users always have access to the latest market information.

ShippingX verification center — KYC tiers and verification steps

Feature 05 · On-Chain KYC Whitelisting

Compliant token infrastructure.

Regulation is critical in financial ecosystems. Built-in KYC/KYB verification and on-chain whitelisting ensure only compliant users participate in token issuance and trading.

ShippingX governance dashboard — on-chain proposals and voting

Feature 06 · On-Chain Voting

Governance & transparency.

Investors should have a voice. Integrated governance mechanisms allow token holders to participate in decision-making through secure, on-chain voting.
